I'm primarily a plush and figure collector, so I don't own as many flats/cards as I probably ought to.
Base Set Mewtwo (1999)
The very first Mewtwo card. It's ugly, weak, and ridiculously common, but it's a piece of Mewtwo history, so here it is.

Mewtwo Strikes Back WB Promo (1999)
You received a random card from a 4-card set (Mewtwo, Pikachu, Dragonite, and randomly Electabuzz) when you went to see the first movie in theaters. As a kid I got Dragonite, but luckily the card shop near me always had tons of the others for sale (especially after the initial Pokemon craze died down). I thought the cards in this little set were so cool when I was younger, with their little gold stamp.
Fun fact: There's a egregiously rare version of Mewtwo with the promo stamp accidentally printed upside down. To this day only three of those error cards are known to exist in the entire world.

Mewtwo Promo Card (From the First Movie VHS) (2000)
It came inside the clamshell case of the VHS (which is where I got this card as a kid - yes I am old).
It's an okay card I guess.

Mewtwo JR Rally Promo Card (2000)
Back in 2000, Japan had a promotion for kids to go around to various places (I think maybe train stations?) and collect points toward a prize. This was the silver prize. Fun fact: This is the only Japanese Mewtwo card printed in English. :)
The card itself was re-released in the US, so it's not hard to find. It's the packaging that makes this so rare. :o

'Pukey-mon' Mewtwo Parody Card (2000)
I couldn't resist adding this crazy thing to the collection.
It's called 'Spewtwo', because apparently it spews electric hairballs or something.
DAT ARTWORK. And the three random toilets in the bottom-right corner.
Along the bottom of the card it says "These cards are not licensed or endorsed by the creators of Pokemon. In fact, Pokemon makes us puke".
I guess that's why we never heard from Pacific Card Company again.
Rarity: Rare? I really have no idea, because there isn't a high demand for these guys.

Mewtwo 'Guest' Card
What are these? I've seen tons of different variations but I have no idea what/where they're from. I got this on Ebay.
I think it might be a sticker, but I don't want to peel it and find out :x

I don't know what this is a promo for. But it's holographic and Japanese and it looks nice. Also I got it for two bucks. So that was cool.

Diamond and Pearl Mewtwo Card (2008)
Being a Yu-Gi-Oh player it was always strange to me how Pokemon disqualified cards from tournament play after they were a certain number of sets old. But hey, whatever, it makes them drop like a stone in price so collectors like me can scoop 'em up cheap. :P

Rocket's Mewtwo Ex
This is one of the most expensive Mewtwo cards on the market right now. Mine was slightly damaged (just a few scratches really), which knocked the price down from $30-something to about $2. :D

Funskool India Mewtwo Base Set Card (2004)
Whilst one day digging through a local thrift shop, I stumbled upon a bag of Pokemon cards unlike any others I'd seen before. It was a bag of 28 of the weirdest cards I'd ever laid eyes on. After finding a Mewtwo in it, I decided to purchase the lot even though I was convinced they were bootlegs.
Two things bothered me about slapping the title 'Bootleg' on them though - the first being that they had all the correct official copyright info, with the addition of 'Licensed by TOP-IN', and the second being that the cards so proudly declared FUNSKOOL all over the card, even though the original Base Sets had nothing to do with Funskool at all. The cards also said 2004, a weird date to print on a bootleg Base Set card set.
Upon arriving home and doing some research, I found that these cards were licensed for sale - authentic and incredibly rare nowadays - in India back in '04. See, Nintendo was trying to cash in on the then-slouching Pokemon franchise by opening up to other regions. The cards at first were a hit, but were quickly overshadowed by the popularity of Beyblades (why? I really don't know).
Anyway, I have no idea how these got into the US, or why they ended up in a thrift shop of all places - all I know is that this is probably one of the most mysterious official Mewtwo cards in existence.
Rarity: At least here in the US, seems to be Extremely Rare!

Mewtwo EX (2012)
Got this in a trade for a Kyurem EX. Best trade ever.
Rarity: At the time of release it was extremely rare and expensive. Nowadays it's dropped to a more moderate price, and can be found on Ebay commonly and relatively cheap.

BEAMS Mewtwo EX Promo Jumbo Card (2013)
I'm not sure what to say about this except that it's a strange recolor of the jumbo Mewtwo EX from the Mewtwo Collection Box, and that it's ridiculously expensive because it was a BEAMS promotional item.

Pokemon XY Evolutions TCG Starter Deck (2016)
Man, remember when this set was on clearance everywhere, and they kept stuffing it into promo boxes because they couldn't get rid of it? The packs being thrown in a box in the Target card section for $1.97 a pop? Still blows my mind how clueless scalpers managed to shoot the price up to like $50 a pack LOL. I got this deck at, of all places, freaking TJ MAXX. Wasn't even looking for Pokemon stuff! It was sold just like this, no promotional packaging or anything, and the box was open, so it was chucked on a random clearance shelf. I counted and all the cards were included, so for like $3 I managed to pick up a whole deck. Pretty cool! Rarity: Uhh well this set got scalped to hell and back, but it was a set that was printed pretty heavily, so I'd say "Uncommon". |
